この１ヶ月の間に、母と父が私たちを訪ねてくれて嬉しかったです。(二人は普段、2000キロも離れたところに住んでいます)パチャとヤニと私が、庭いじりができ、子どもたちが自由に走りまわれ、静かでくつろげる生活の場所を見つけたことを二人とも喜んでいます。私は二人ともここに来たことがとても嬉しかったのだと思います。芸術家である私の母のバベットはパチャの絵への強い興味にとても興奮していました。
私の母とパチャとで、岩と海の風景を大きなキャンバスに描いてくれたので、リビングルームに飾りました。子育てについて、私と両親の違いを観察することは興味深いことです。両親が孫たちをかわいがる一方で、時折、彼らは果たして孫たちを(それぞれの性格や特徴のある)「個」としてみているのだろうかと思うことがあります。両親はむしろ彼らを親に管理される必要のあるただの「モノ」としてはみていないかと。もちろん、子どもとの間にルールをつくったり、親が主導になることを否定はしません(なによりも子どもたちの安全のために)。けれども、私たちは子どもたちを地球上の意志をもった１人の人間として尊重しなくてはならないと思うのです！
子どもたちはここで満ち溢れた生活を送っています。私たちは海から少し離れたところに住んでいるので、子どもたちが遊ぶための小さなスイミングプールを購入しました。そのときに、私は砂場とジャンプするための中古のトランポリンを見つけました。－ガーデンは楽しいアクティビティでいっぱいです。これはすべて、マンゴを干す2ヶ月間、外でほとんどの時間を費やすための計画の一部です。美味しそうな香りと熟れたオーガニックマンゴの甘いジュースに包まれながら、子どもたちが遊んでいるのを見て過ごすのです。最初のマンゴが出来次第、このプロセスについての何枚かの写真を送ります。とてもいい実験になりますし、うまくいけば、たぶん来年にはこのプロセスを拡張してトロピカルな太陽のもとでマンゴを干すのを手伝ってくれる何人かの友人を招待できると思います！
いま気温が毎日23℃から33℃まで上昇しています。幸運なことにまだ涼しい風が通っていて、絶縁材や引っ越してから私が取り付けた屋根の送風機は気温を下げるのにすごく助かっています。それでも私たちは、暑い北クイーンズランドで過ごす最初の夏に向けて準備をしています。
数日前、初めて干しマンゴをつくってみましたが、すでにコツをつかんだようです。私は熟れたマンゴを使っていたんですが、それを干そうと決めた日が曇ってしまったのです。完全に乾燥するまで二日かかってしまい熟れ過ぎた味になってしまったのです。次にやるときは当日、晴れかを確認して熱を集めるための反射紙を作ろうかと思います。実験を続けるのを楽しみにしています！
今日はヤニが熱と発疹を出しました。－たぶん、水疱瘡だと思います。ラッキーなことに、私がまだ母乳で育てているので、ヤニは私の血液から抗体を得ることでしょう。(私は子どものときに水疱瘡がありました)だから、ヤニの水疱瘡はすぐに治ると思います。
やっと現地の環境団体とコンタクトをとりました。ランドケアーという、公共地の森林再生と地元の環境問題の啓発にがんばっている団体です。グリーンケアとのつながりはまだはじまったばかりですが、選挙で環境保護に熱心な候補書を支持する環境保護団体をつくることができればと期待しています。オーストラリアでは「テロとの闘い」に反対する国民を統制する恐ろしい動きが起こっています。私たちは将来の平和や社会正義の問題について自分の意見を主張できる勇気をもつことを求められているんじゃないかと思います。
日本と強いつながりを持つことはとてもいいことですね。来年１月下旬～２上旬の私とメグ(ゆっくり堂)が計画したハチドリエコツアーをとても楽しみにしています。ツアーでは北ニューサザンウェールズのオルタナティブなライフスタイル(パーマカルチャー、シードセイバー、再生可能エネルギー等々)、ディープエコロジーワークショップなどを体験するほか、壮大な熱帯雨林やグレートバリアリーフを訪れ、貴重な生態系が直面している環境問題について学びます。参加者に行動する勇気を与え、地球とのつながりの中で私たちが生かされていることを伝えるツアーを企画することは、とってもやりがいがあります。

During the past month we have had the pleasure of visits from both my Mother and Father (who usually live some 2000 kms away) that have been lovely. They are both happy that Pacha, Yani and I have found a quiet, relaxing place to live with space to garden and to let children run free. I think they were both happy visiting here. My Mother, Babette, who is an artist, was very excited with Pacha's painting enthusiasm.
Together they painted a scene of the sea with rocks on a big canvas for our living room. It is interesting to observe the difference in the way I parent compared to
their ideas on how to bring up children. While they both love their grandchildren very much, sometimes I wonder if they recognise them as individuals (complete with their own characters and unique response) rather than just products of their parents that need to be controlled. Yes, I too believe that we must set limits and have rules (for children's safety more than anything) but to also respect them as fully alive and aware beings on this Earth!
The children have a full life here. Because we are a little far from the sea, we bought a small swimming pool for them to play in. Then I found a second hand
trampoline for jumping on, as well as a sand pit - so the garden is full of fun activities. It is all part of our plan to spend a lot of time outside over the next two months preparing mangoes for drying. I will enjoy watching them play as I immerse myself in the delicious smell and luscious juice of ripe, organic mangoes. I will send some photos of this process as soon as the first mangoes are ready. It will be a good experiment and if it works well, maybe next year we can expand the process and invite some friends to help dry mangoes in the tropical sun!
It is heating up here now - from 23 to 33 degrees celcius every day. Luckily there is still a cool breeze and the insulation and air circulation fan in the roof I put in after moving here helps a lot to keep the temperature down. But we are preparing
ourselves for our first hot north Queensland summer.

The mangoes took 2 days to fully dry out and had an over-ripe taste to them. Next time I will make sure it is a sunny day and make a reflective sheet to increase the heat on themÅcI am looking forward to continuing

Today Yani has a fever and an itchy rash - I think it is chickenpox. Luckily, since I am still breastfeeding him, he will get the antibodies from my blood (I had chickenpox as a child) and I am sure it will clear up quickly.
Finally I have made contact with the local environment group - Landcare - who are working very hard to reforest cleared public land and raise awareness of local environment issues. It is the beginning of a process I hope will lead to my starting a Green group that can support Green candidates in elections and raise important issues. Politically in Australia we are seeing a frightening movement to control popular dissent with the excuse of combating terrorism. I think we may all be called upon to have courage in expressing our opinions when it comes to peace and social justice issues in the future.
It is so good to keep our links to Japan strong and I am very much looking forward to a Hummingbird tour that Megumi (Slow company) and I are organising for late January or early February next year. It will include visits to alternative lifestyle examples in northern NSW (permaculture, seedsavers, renewable energy etc), deep ecology work and also visiting the magnificent rainforests and the Great Barrier Reef and learning about threats to these incredible eco-systems. It is so satisfying to plan a journey with the intention of empowerment and re-energising, clarifying how we can live our own lives in harmony with the Earth.

７月に日本を訪ねた際、ナマケモノ倶楽部のメンバーから「ホームページで日記をつけて、アンニャのスローライフをみなで共有しては」という提案がありました。でも、わたしは「何にもないのよ」と答えました。そう、毎日があまりにもゆっくりすぎて、何も起きないのです！
オーストラリアの静かな田舎町で「普通」の生活を送ることは、エクアドルの雲霧林で生活することの「面白さ」や「やりがい」からはかけ離れています。オーストラリアでのわたしたちの生活があまりにも居心地のよいことに罪悪感さえ覚えてしまいます。もちろん、わたしたち家族は、富める国の標準からみるととても質素に暮らしています。それでも、蛇口から出てくる「温水」や洗濯機でヤニのおむつを洗う「スピード」に驚かずにはいられません！
わたしたちはこの家を所有しています。（ローンはまだ払ってるけどね）大きな庭でモノを修理したり、ペンキを塗ったり、自家菜園をつくることに夢中になっています。ライフスタイルを選べる自由を持ち、利便性を享受できるわたしたちがどんなに恵まれているかを日々痛感しています。
二週間前、ビジーでストレスフルな街、ゴールドコーストから母がわたしたちを訪ねてきました。わたしたちが話したことといえば、この町の「平和な」自然について冗談をまじえながらいろいろ語ったことかしら。子どもたちと遊んだり、ただ座って話したりして一緒の時間を過ごしながらね！
ここでの暮らしは、あなたが毎朝リラックスして起きてその日にあなたがなにをしたいかゆっくり決めることができる場所です。わたしは計画したりチャレンジしたり仕事をするのがすき。そして生産的であること、世界を知って意見をもったり交換したりすることがすき。（ストレスを抱えないで「忙しいこと」を楽しむことなんてできるの？）とりわけ、日の出とともにきこえる鳥のさえずりのコーラスで子どもたちと起きるのがすきです！
ここにいる多くの人は自分の時間のなかでなにをすればいいのかをしらないので、自分自身や自分の創造力を滅ぼすために時間を使っています。－タバコ（吸い過ぎ）、過食（食べ過ぎ）、飲酒（飲み過ぎ）、麻薬（ドラッグ）、一日中のテレビ（見過ぎ）。おおくの母親や若者が目的意識をなくしかけているということが、わたしにはとってはもっとも悲しいことのひとつです。
先週、夏の気温が高くなったので、外遊びを楽しむために日よけスペースをつくってみました。小さいビニール性のスイミングプール、砂場そしてマンゴーの加工やピクニックをするためのテーブル！つまりこれからの何ヶ月かは、わたしたちは時間のおおくを外で過ごすということです。
この時期に起きたすばらしい出来事のひとつをみなさんに報告しますね！私の誕生日に親友からもらったチベットの祈祷旗を吊るしたときのこと。２時間後、祈祷旗がぱたぱたと風にはためいています。すると４種類の違う鳥－モズ、アメリカヒタキ、セキレイ、天然バト－が祈祷旗の周りを踊って飛んでいるのです！チベット仏教を愛する鳥たちなのかもしれないですね。
スローすぎるほどの日常の中にいる私ですが、なんとか世の中の流れにもついていっています。アメリカで起こったハリケーン災害のテレビ報道には、ある意味釘付けになり、同時に深く落ち込んでいます。世界で一番富んでいる国が、不公正な戦争に何億も費やす一方で、自分の国の人々を見捨てているのです。気候変動や地球温暖化がすすんだ結果、地球からのツケとしてハリケーンが起こっていることにアメリカの指導者たちは気づこうしないのです。ガソリン価格の高騰は、ハリケーンの影響だけでなく、限りある資源に対する必然的な結果です。今回の出来事により、よい輸送システムと少ない車社会へと導くことができれば素晴らしいと思いませんか！―それこそが私たちがめざすべき「よりスローなライスタイル」です。
オーストラリア、エアーでの私たちの理想的なスローライフにもひとつだけ欠けていることがあります。－それは、長くつきあえるような地元のネットワークです。新しい友達を作り気の合う人を探すのには時間が掛かります。でも、わたしは新しい仲間をさがし出すためにもっと時間を割いてみようと思います。

Slow Life in Australia
On our July visit to Japan I was asked to keep a diary to share with members of the Sloth Club. 'But there's nothing to say' I responded, ' Life is too Slow! - nothing ever happens!'
Having a 'normal' life here in Australia, in a quiet country town, is far removed from the challenges and excitement of living in the cloud forest in Ecuador. I feel guilty that our life is so comfortable. Though we are still poor by a rich country's standards - I marvel at hot water coming out of the taps and the speed that the washing machine cleans Yani's nappies!
We actually own this house (though we are still paying the bank loan) and I have had much joy fixing things and painting and creating food gardens in the big yard. I am acutely aware at how lucky we are to have all these conveniences and the freedom to make choices about most things in our lives.
My mother has just visited us for the past two weeks from the busy and stressful city of the Gold Coast. We talked and joked often about the 'peaceful' nature of this town, having time to spend just sitting and talking with each other and playing with the children.
It is a place where every morning you can wake up relaxed and slowly decide what you want to do with the day. I love projects and challenges and jobs to do, I love being productive, I love finding out about the world, having opinions and sharing them (can we enjoy being 'busy' without being stressed?) and above all I love waking up with my children to the sound of a chorus of bird song at sunrise.
Many people here don't know what to do with their time and spend it destroying themselves and their creativity - smoking, over-eating, drinking, taking drugs, watching TV all day. It is one of the saddest things for me that many mothers and young people here seem to have lost their sense of purpose.
Last week we created a new covered area outside to enjoy as the summer heats up. A small inflatable swimming pool, a sand play area and an outside table for mango processing and picnics - will mean much of our time over the next months will be outside. One of the magic things that happened during this time was when we hung up the Tibetan prayer flags I had received from my best friend for my birthday. About
two hours after they were up and flapping in the wind - 4 different kinds of birds were cavorting around them - butcher birds, pee wees, wagtails and native pigeons - I wonder if the Birds are Tibetan Buddhists!
I do keep up with the world to some extent. I watch the news and have been fascinated and deeply disturbed by the hurricane disasters in the US. The richest
country in the world abandoning its own people while spending billions on unjustified war. The lack of recognition that the hurricanes are an indication of
what is to come as a result of climate change and global warming. The rising price of petrol - an inevitable response to a dwindling resource (not only the result of the hurricanes). Wouldn't it be wonderful if this can lead the way to better transport systems and less cars! - a Slower life.
There is one thing lacking in our ideal Australian Slow Life in Ayr - we are missing our long established local communities. It takes time to make new friends and find like-minded people and I am going to try to spend more time searching out new local networks.

◆オーストラリアでスローライフ、はじめます！
わたしたちのスローライフについて長い間お知らせしなくてごめんなさい！
最近、PachaとYaniと３人でオーストラリアの新しい場所での生活を楽しんでいます －掃除したり、ペンキをぬったり、庭の手入れをしたり、探検したりして、田舎暮らしを楽しんでいます。現在オーストラリア、クイーンズランド州のさらに北に位置するエアー（Ayr）に住んでいます。エクアドルに戻る前に今後１年か２年ここで過ごすつもりです。
エアーは人口約１万人の小さな町で、Townsvilleタウンズビルからおよそ１時間ほど南、Burdekinバーデキンという大きくて豊かな川のデルタ地帯にあります。地下水を含む水資源で有名な場所で、さとうきび、マンゴーやその他の農作物がよく育ちます。わたしたちの住まいは海に近く（２０ｋｍ）、あのすばらしいグレートバリアリーフにも近いところにあります。今はとても暑いのですが、日陰にある小さな浅いプールに腰かけ猛暑をしのいでいます。
ここはスローでゆったりした町で、人々は微笑んだりいろんなことを話しあう時間を持っています。ほとんど毎日同じ人に出会うのでみんな近所の人のことをよく知ることができるんですよ（私たちの近所の方たちはとても親切）。また、町まで１０分しか離れていないのですが、自然がすばらしく豊かです（毎朝ワライカワセミからバタンインコまでオーストラリアの鳥たちのコーラスが聞こえますし、午後にはガンの群れが頭上を飛んでいきます。）向かいの女性はトビ（わたしにとっては特別な鳥）にえさをやっていて、毎日彼女が用意した肉片を食べに急降下してくる２０～３０羽の鳥にわたしたちは大喜びです。
また、Pachaは５分離れたところにいる２頭の馬に毎日会いに行くんだと譲りません。わたしたちの家は大きな古い家で、広い裏庭があるのでそれを徐々にパーマカルチャーガーデンにしようとしているところです。
雲霧林のエクアドルから遠く離れてはいても、自分たちがスローなライフスタイルに少しでも近づくことのできる場所なのです。ゴールドコーストではなくこの土地を選んだ大きな理由です。わたしの家族は少し離れたところにいますが、すでにここに遊びに来る予定があり、わたしたちも２、３ヶ月に１度は彼らのところへ行くつもりです。
ほかにも理由があります。わたしは長期的にオプションとして持つことのできる家にお金を使いたかったのです（そのため人生で初めて銀行に借金をしなければならなくなったとしても！）ゴールドコーストでは小さくて家賃の高いアパートしか借りることができません。でもわたしたちは自分たちの場所を持ちたかったのです－壁をとりこわしてテラスを作り、心ゆくまでガーデニングをして広い裏庭で遊びたいのです！
エアーでは「時間」がたくさんあるので（渋滞はないし駐車場を待つとかほかの妨げがない）、近々エクアドルの現行プロジェクトやキャンペーンについてEメールでもう少しお手伝いできるようになると思います（コタカチ、エルミラグロ、その他のエクアドルのプロジェクトではつねにボランティアを必要としています（長ければ長いほうがいいです）。
◆アンニャの近況～ピースボート、選挙への挑戦
ここ２ヶ月はとても忙しくしていました。まず１月にはニュージーランドからシドニーまでのピースボートに１週間参加しました。１５年間ずっとピースボートへ参加することを夢みていたのですが、地元の選挙に立候補していたため、短い期間の参加にせざるを得ませんでした。でも乗船していた１週間はとてもすばらしく、新しい友人がたくさんできました。PachaとYaniのほうがわたしより人気がありました。（子供はほとんど参加していませんでした！）ボランティアの方も職員の方も乗客の方も、みなさん子供たちの面倒をとてもよくみてくださったので、海に落ちてしまうのではないかという不安は取り越し苦労に終わりました。
また、ナマケモノ倶楽部のネットワークがピースボートとつながりを結んだこともすばらしいと思いました。彼らは多くの面でよく似たビジョンを持っているようですね。また（先にビースボートに参加された）中村さんに刺激を受けたという方にもたくさん会いました。カフェスローで定期的にピースボートデーをもうけては？というアイデアに、皆さんわくわくしていました。わたし自身も、週に１度か２週間に１度、カフェスローで「スローマザー倶楽部」を開いては？というアイデアを話さずにはいられなくてお話しました。スローな精神をもったおかあさんたちが子供たちを連れて集まり、オーガニックコーヒーを楽しんでいる間は子供たちの世話をしてもらうのです。きっといつか実現するでしょうね！
ピースボートからゴールドコーストへ戻ってからは選挙まで数日しかありませんでした。Currumbinというわたしが育った町の補欠選挙で、グリーン党の候補として環境問題、参加型民主主義、生活の質の問題を提起しました。全部で１４名が立候補し、グリーン党について知ってもらう重要な機会が得られました。最終的には、地元の緑の党メンバーの力強い支援のおかげで約１２％の投票を獲得、１４名のうち３位となりました。この結果はめざましいもので、さらに多くの市民の態度に変化が起きていることを示すものだと感じました。わたしはどの選挙にも人々に「グリーン」を選ぶ機会がなければならないと思っているので、いつかまた候補として立つことを楽しみにしています。
◆７月、日本でお会いしましょう！

現在はゴールドコーストで母の展覧会の開催を手伝っています。この展覧会は地元の環境ネットワークにとっても刺激があり、力を強めるよい機会になると思います。母はすばらしい才能で４５年間作品を作り続けてきましたが、これが最初の展覧会です。テーマは「Love for Lifeand Art 人生と芸術への愛」で、わたしたちが過去に行ってきた環境キャンペーンの新聞記事の切り抜きを貼ったものも展示する予定です。
今年の７月半ばにはPacha、Yaniと一緒にまた日本へ行く予定です。８月１日には愛知万博の地球市民プロジェクトに参加します。日本では音楽やインスピレーションを携えて他の地域も訪れたいと思っていますので、もしイベントの企画にご関心がありましたらナマケモノ倶楽部までお知らせください！
最後になりましたが、もしみなさんがオーストラリアにお越しになりたい場合はお知らせください。エクアドルと違うことはわかっていますが、少なくとも日本からはすこし近いですし、おどろくほど美しい自然があります。またここのオルタナティブなライフスタイルはとても進歩していて大変刺激を受けます。
エアーは、ホームステイや英語の（スローな）勉強、また壮大なパーマカルチャーガーデンのデザインをしたり作り上げるお手伝いに来ていただくのに理想的な場所です。しかもそれだけでなく、世界の驚くべき不思議、グレートバリアリーフにこんなに近いのです（地球温暖化の影響でいつまであるかわかりませんよ・・）。

わたしたちのスローライフについて長い間お知らせしなくてごめんなさい！
最近、PachaとYaniと３人でオーストラリアの新しい場所での生活を楽しんでいます －掃除したり、ペンキをぬったり、庭の手入れをしたり、探検したりして、田舎暮らしを楽しんでいます。現在オーストラリア、クイーンズランド州のさらに北に位置するエアー（Ayr）に住んでいます。エクアドルに戻る前に今後１年か２年ここで過ごすつもりです。
エアーは人口約１万人の小さな町で、Townsvilleタウンズビルからおよそ１時間ほど南、Burdekinバーデキンという大きくて豊かな川のデルタ地帯にあります。地下水を含む水資源で有名な場所で、さとうきび、マンゴーやその他の農作物がよく育ちます。わたしたちの住まいは海に近く（２０ｋｍ）、あのすばらしいグレートバリアリーフにも近いところにあります。今はとても暑いのですが、日陰にある小さな浅いプールに腰かけ猛暑をしのいでいます。
ここはスローでゆったりした町で、人々は微笑んだりいろんなことを話しあう時間を持っています。ほとんど毎日同じ人に出会うのでみんな近所の人のことをよく知ることができるんですよ（私たちの近所の方たちはとても親切）。また、町まで１０分しか離れていないのですが、自然がすばらしく豊かです（毎朝ワライカワセミからバタンインコまでオーストラリアの鳥たちのコーラスが聞こえますし、午後にはガンの群れが頭上を飛んでいきます。）向かいの女性はトビ（わたしにとっては特別な鳥）にえさをやっていて、毎日彼女が用意した肉片を食べに急降下してくる２０～３０羽の鳥にわたしたちは大喜びです。
また、Pachaは５分離れたところにいる２頭の馬に毎日会いに行くんだと譲りません。わたしたちの家は大きな古い家で、広い裏庭があるのでそれを徐々にパーマカルチャーガーデンにしようとしているところです。
雲霧林のエクアドルから遠く離れてはいても、自分たちがスローなライフスタイルに少しでも近づくことのできる場所なのです。ゴールドコーストではなくこの土地を選んだ大きな理由です。わたしの家族は少し離れたところにいますが、すでにここに遊びに来る予定があり、わたしたちも２、３ヶ月に１度は彼らのところへ行くつもりです。
ほかにも理由があります。わたしは長期的にオプションとして持つことのできる家にお金を使いたかったのです（そのため人生で初めて銀行に借金をしなければならなくなったとしても！）ゴールドコーストでは小さくて家賃の高いアパートしか借りることができません。でもわたしたちは自分たちの場所を持ちたかったのです－壁をとりこわしてテラスを作り、心ゆくまでガーデニングをして広い裏庭で遊びたいのです！
エアーでは「時間」がたくさんあるので（渋滞はないし駐車場を待つとかほかの妨げがない）、近々エクアドルの現行プロジェクトやキャンペーンについてEメールでもう少しお手伝いできるようになると思います（コタカチ、エルミラグロ、その他のエクアドルのプロジェクトではつねにボランティアを必要としています（長ければ長いほうがいいです）。
◆アンニャの近況～ピースボート、選挙への挑戦
ここ２ヶ月はとても忙しくしていました。まず１月にはニュージーランドからシドニーまでのピースボートに１週間参加しました。１５年間ずっとピースボートへ参加することを夢みていたのですが、地元の選挙に立候補していたため、短い期間の参加にせざるを得ませんでした。でも乗船していた１週間はとてもすばらしく、新しい友人がたくさんできました。PachaとYaniのほうがわたしより人気がありました。（子供はほとんど参加していませんでした！）ボランティアの方も職員の方も乗客の方も、みなさん子供たちの面倒をとてもよくみてくださったので、海に落ちてしまうのではないかという不安は取り越し苦労に終わりました。
また、ナマケモノ倶楽部のネットワークがピースボートとつながりを結んだこともすばらしいと思いました。彼らは多くの面でよく似たビジョンを持っているようですね。また（先にビースボートに参加された）中村さんに刺激を受けたという方にもたくさん会いました。カフェスローで定期的にピースボートデーをもうけては？というアイデアに、皆さんわくわくしていました。わたし自身も、週に１度か２週間に１度、カフェスローで「スローマザー倶楽部」を開いては？というアイデアを話さずにはいられなくてお話しました。スローな精神をもったおかあさんたちが子供たちを連れて集まり、オーガニックコーヒーを楽しんでいる間は子供たちの世話をしてもらうのです。きっといつか実現するでしょうね！

Dear Friends,
Please forgive me for the long time it has been since I have written an update of my family's slow life!
Recently our days have been spent enjoying a new place in Australia - cleaning, painting, gardening, exploring and enjoying a country life. Pacha, Yani and
I now live in Ayr, in far north Queensland in Australia, where we will be based for the next year or two before returning to Ecuador. Ayr is a small town of about 10 000 people at the delta of a massive and bountiful river system (the Burdekin), about one hour south of Townsville. It is famous for its water sources, including underground water - that ensures the sugar cane, mango and other agricultural crops are successful. We are close (20km) to the sea and to the incredible Great Barrier Reef. It is hot and tropical at the moment - but we escape the worst of the heat sitting in a little wading pool in the shade. We are living in a slow, relaxed town where people have time to smile and time to talk about all kinds of things. You meet the same people most days and get to know your neighbours well (ours are very helpful too).
Despite living just 10 minutes walk to town, nature is deliciously abundant - every morning a chorus of Australian birds from Kookaburras to Cockatoos, in the afternoons groups of local geese fly over head. A lady down the road feeds the whistling kites (a special bird for me) and we can revel in 20 to 30 birds swooping to feed on the meat scraps she has for them each day. Pacha insists that we have a daily visit to a couple of horses 5 minutes down the road.
We live in a big old house with a huge backyard where we are slowly starting to transform into a permaculture garden. It is a place where we can be a little closer to a slow lifestyle despite being far away from the cloud forest in Ecuador. That's the main reason we have chosen to live here rather than the Gold Coast. My family, though a little further away, have already made plans to visit and we will visit them every few months too.
There are other reasons too. I would prefer to pay off a house that we will have as an option in the long term (even though it means going into debt with a bank for the first time in my life!). On the Gold Coast, we would only be able to rent a small, expensive flat to live in. And we love having our own place - knocking out walls and building decks and gardening to our hearts content and playing in a huge back yard! Because there is more 'time' in Ayr (no traffic jams, parking queues or other distractions) I hope soon to be able to help more with the ongoing projects and campaigns in Ecuador by email. (We are always in need of volunteers for the Cotacachi, El Milagro and other projects in Ecuador - the longer the better).
We have had a very busy time over the past two months. In January we joined the Peace Boat for a week from New Zealand to Sydney. Although I had been dreaming of
joining the Peace Boat for the past fifteen years, we had to cut the trip short because I was running as a candidate in a local election campaign. However,
during the week we were on board we had a great time and made many new friends. I think Pacha and Yani were more popular than me - there were very few other
children on board! Volunteers, workers and guests helped us so much looking after the children - so my fears of them falling over the side were unfounded. It
was also great to feel the Sloth network making links and connections with the Peace Boat - who seem to have a similar vision in many areas. I met many people who
had been inspired by Nakamura-san (who was an earlier leg of the same journey) and who were excited by the idea of having a regular Peace Boat day at Cafe Slow.
I couldn't help to mention again my idea of a weekly or fortnightly Slow Mother Club at Caf_ Slow - for Sloth minded Mothers to bring their children along to be looked after while they enjoy a Slow cup of organic coffeeÅcI am sure that one day this will happen!
Coming back to the Gold Coast after the Peace Boat, I had a few days before election day. I was the Greens party candidate for a local by-election in Currumbin (the place I grew up) raising environmental, participatory democracy and quality of life issues.
There were 14 candidates running in total that gave us an important opportunity to raise the profile of the Greens. The final result, thanks to wonderful support by other local Greens members, was that we came 3rd out of 14 candidates with around 12% of the vote going to us. We felt it was a fantastic outcome and reflects the shift in attitude of a growing number of people. I still feel it is vital for there to be a 'Green' choice for the public in every election - so am looking forward to running again sometime in the future.
So, that's more or less my update for the past few months. I am helping organise my Mother's art exhibition on the Gold Coast,that will be exciting and empowering for the local environment network. It is the first time she had an exhibition, despite wonderful talent and artwork for the past 45 years.
The theme of the exhibition is love for Life and Art and we will include mounted news clippings of some of our environmental campaigns over the years.
From around mid July this year Pacha, Yani and I plan to visit Japan once again. We will join the Global Citizen's Initiative at the Aichi Expo on August 1st and hope also to visit some other parts of Japan with music and inspiration. If you are interested in organising event, let the Sloth Club know!
Finally, let me know if you would like to visit Australia. I know it's not the same as Ecuador - but it is at least a little closer to Japan and there are amazingly beautiful natural places to visit. The alternative lifestyle here is well developed and very inspiring. Ayr, where I live, is an ideal place for an experience in a homestay, studying (Slow) English, or for helping design and create a magnificent permaculture garden - while being so close to the amazing wonder of the world, the Great Barrier Reef(and who knows how long it will still be here with the impact of global warming...).
I can't finish this report without expressing my joy and congratulations to Naoko and her family - the latest Sloth babies to be born. Life continues with exuberance and abundance!
